Agreement and Disagreement in Debate


AGREEMENT
Strong Agreement
- You're perfectly right
- I couldn't agree more
- Precisely

- Absolutely

Mild Agreement
- You may be right there
- That's true
- I suppose so

DISAGREEMENT
Mild Disagreement
- That's not really how I see it
- I don't really agree
- I can't really go along with you there
- I think you're mistaken
- I'm afraid I can't agree with you there

Strong Disagreement
- I'm sorry, but that's out of the question
- I think you're wrong
- Of course not
- That's absurd
- That's ridiculous

Note : Be careful with "that's absurd" and "that's ridiculous". These expressions are very strong and can be offensive.

Comparisons with Adjectives

Equative
As + adj + as
Example :
Tokyo is as crowded as New York

Comparative
- 1 syllable : ex. cheap
adj + er + than
Example :
Nokia is cheaper than i-phone

- More than 1 syllable : ex. beautiful
more + adj + than
Example :
New Zealand is more beautiful than Canada

Superlative
- 1 syllable : ex. big
the + adj + est
Example :
China is the bigest country in the world

- More than 1 syllable : ex. polluted
the + most + adj
China is the most polluted country in the world

With more/less + adj
Example :
Tokyo is more crowded than Bangkok
Bangkok is (much) less crowded

About House, Neighborhood, and City

Adverbs and Adjectives
It's very small            It's not very big 
It's awfully small       It's big enough
It's really small          It's not big enough
It's pretty small         It's too small
It's fairly small

Example :
- This neighborhood is not clean enough = It's very/really dirty
- The downtown area is not safe at night = It's very/really dangerous
- My apartment is not very expensive = It's cheap enough
- It's too warm here in the summer = It's very/pretty hot

a). What's the weather like in your hometown?
      It's very cold in the winter, but it's pretty nice in the summer.
b). Do you live in a nice neighborhood?
     It's all right, but it's too far from my office downtown.
c). What's your house or apartment like?
     It's pretty comfortable, and the rent is reasonable.
d). What's your city like to live in?
      It's pretty nice, and the people are very friendly, too.

Would you mind...?

Request with imperatives
- Turn the TV down
- Leave the door open
- Please keep the noise down
- Move your car, please
- Please don't park here

Request with modals
Jika menggunakan "Would you mind", maka setelah itu gunakan V-ing.
Example :
(+) Would you mind turning down the radio, Andre? It's very loud.
(-) Would you mind not smoking here? This is a nonsmoking section.

Jika menggunakan "Could you", maka setelah itu gunakan V1.
Example :
(+) Could you move your car? It's blocking my driveway.
(-) Could you don't leave the door open, please?

Maksud dari "Would you mind" adalah berkeberatankah kamu.
Sedangkan "Could you" adalah bisakah kamu.

Accepting a request
- Oh, sure. I'd be glad to
- OK. I'll do that
- All right
- Sure! No problem
- Of course. I'd love to

Refusing a request
- Oh, sorry. I can't right now
- I'm sorry, but I'm busy
- I'd rather not
- What? You must be kidding!

Present Perfect Tense

Example :

Dream Vacation

Future Tense

Be going to = will
"Going to" bisa dibaca "gonna"

Example :
1. She is going to continue her study in Australia next year
2. I'm going to visit my grandma in hometown tomorrow
3. His father is going to built a new hospital in the city next week

Plan an interesting trip around the world (Exercise)
 I will start from England, and then French, and also Australia. In England, I will see Big Ben, in French, I will see Eiffel tower, in Australia, I will see kangaroo. I should travel until 3 weeks. I will travel by plane. I should spend 1 week in each place. I will stay in luxury hotel, 5 stars. I'm planning to take picture with Eiffel tower, big ben, kangaroo and interestinf building and place. I don't know I should take money, it is very expensive I think.

A Time To Remember

Maksud kalimat :
1. "Can I give you a hand?" sama dengan "Can I help you?"
2. "What do you do?" adalah "Apa pekerjaan mu?"
3. "What are you doing?" adalah "Apa yang sedang kamu kerjakan?"
4. "Say" bukan hanya "Katakan", tapi juga bisa "Hey"
5. "Why don't you come over for ...?" adalah "Gimana kalo kamu mampir untuk ...?"
6. "Where are you from?" atau "Where do you come from?" bisa untuk menanyakan kampung
    seseorang

Unforgettable Moment (Exercise)
I remember, at my school 3 years ago. I lost someone's mobile phone. She was my junior. She cried, I was panic. I felt dissapointed for my self. I must help her to find that phone. But, a few minutes, we didn't get it. What should I do? Did I buy a new phone for her? I did it. I got some money from my moneybox. I was so lucky. I was forced to do it, should start saving early. Finally, I brought same mobile phone for her. And she was very happy and grateful. I promise to my self, I am not be negligent again..
